Mining Industry Notice – Statutory Supervisor Deadline Approaching
Significant changes to Western Australia’s Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws means that all Mining Statutory Supervisors must meet new compliance requirements by 31 March 2026. These updates, introduced under the Schedule 26 WHS (Mines) Regulations 2022, require supervisors to hold specific units of competency to continue performing statutory duties on mine sites.
These changes aim to strengthen safety leadership across the mining industry by ensuring supervisors have the practical skills and WHS knowledge needed to manage risk, monitor compliance, and support Safer Healthier Work.
Understanding the New Requirements
By March 2026, all mining supervisors must hold specific WHS qualifications to legally perform their roles. These roles fall under different levels (4 & 5), with each level requiring specific units of competency.
For Level 4 positions only, the regulations require the completion of two nationally recognised WHS units, which WHS Foundation delivers:
- BSBWHS411 – Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs
- BSBWHS414 – Contribute to WHS risk management
These units focus on core responsibilities such as hazard identification, risk management, WHS monitoring, and supporting safe systems of work.
Level 5 positions require additional units of comptency, which are not delivered by WHS Foundation.
Training Available at WHS Foundation
WHS Foundation provides a dedicated three-day, face-to-face Mining WHS Statutory Supervisor course designed specifically to meet the competency requirements for Level 4 statutory roles. Participants complete both required WHS units, with all assessments finalised in the classroom. A practice mock exam is also included to support learning and preparation, and the WorkSafe WA / LGIRS examinations are held on our premises for added convenience.
WHS Foundation has one remaining course for 2025, running 15 – 17 December, with monthly sessions scheduled in 2026.
Why Enrol Now?
With the 2026 deadline approaching, supervisors and organisations are encouraged to complete the required training as early as possible to avoid operational delays and ensure ongoing compliance with the WHS (Mines) Regulations 2022.
