The Introductory Training Course for Health & Safety Representatives is designed for elected Health & Safety Representatives. Supervisors, Managers, Safety Committee Members who are not elected Health & Safety Representatives may also attend.

The WorkSafe WA-approved Health and Safety Representative (HSR) course is a five-day introductory training program designed for elected Health and Safety Representatives in Western Australia. This course meets the training requirements outlined in the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2020 and WHS Regulations 2022 for both general workplaces and the mining industry.

Delivered face-to-face at WHS Foundation’s convenient North Lake, Balcatta, and Bunbury venues, the course provides a comprehensive introduction to work health and safety legislation, hazard identification, and risk management responsibilities for HSRs.

Participants will also have the opportunity to:

  • Engage with LGIRS Community Education Officers during an interactive safety presentation
  • Hear from PBF Australia about real-world safety incidents and learnings that reinforce the important of strong safety culture

This nationally harmonised WHS framework ensures HSRs understand how to apply health and safety laws, represent workers, and contribute to safer workplaces across industries in Western Australia.

WHS Foundation’s course design and delivery methods are inclusive of all genders, ethnicities, and language backgrounds. All participants are encouraged to contribute and participate fully throughout the program.

Clarification of entitlements for HSRs
Under the Work Health and Safety Act 2020, the Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must allow an elected Health and Safety Representative to attend approved training and cover course fees and any reasonable associated costs.

Health and Safety Representatives are entitled to their usual rate of pay while attending the course.

In accordance with legislation, Health and Safety Representatives are also entitled to attend a one-day refresher course each year, commencing 12 months after completing their initial training. Further finromation is available on the Health and Safety Representative Refresher course page here.

Through reflective learning, peer support & practical application, participants will:

  • Apply knowledge of WHS legislation in the role of a Health and Safety Representative
  • Identify and locate WHS information sources relevant to workplace safety
  • Recognise, assess and control workplace hazards and risks
  • Conduct workplace inspections and incident investigations effectively
  • Communicate and represent employees on health and safety matters
  • Understand the roles and functions of a Health and Safety Committee
  • Resolve workplace conflicts and issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) when appropriate

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance approved by WorkSafe WA.
