The Heavy Vehicle Road Safety – Hazard and Risk Program is a Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) course designed for individuals seeking to enter the heavy vehicle industry or gain foundational knowledge in road transport safety before obtaining a heavy vehicle driver’s license.

Delivered over two in-class training days in the dedicated WHS Centre in North Lake, this course provides an introductory overview of the Australian heavy vehicle and road transport industry, focusing on civil construction operations, on-road heavy vehicle hazards, and risk management practices.

Participants will develop essential skills to identify and manage hazards and risks associated with heavy vehicle operations, improve situational awareness, and promote safe driving behaviours in accordance with WHS legislation and road safety standards.

Through reflective learning, peer support and practical application, participants will:

  • Explore the Australian heavy vehicle (HV) industry, including key regulations, licensing pathways, and the role of industry authorities
  • Identify and manage hazards and risks associated with heavy vehicle driving and the road network
  • Apply risk control measures in civil construction environments and during on-road operations
  • Understand how weather, fatigue, and isolation impact driver safety and implement strategies to minimise these risks
  • Conduct pre-start inspections and basic heavy vehicle checks safely and effectively
  • Gain exposure to the heavy vehicle simulator and its role in improving driver competency
  • Communicate effectively and inclusively when working with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) colleagues
  • Apply principles of psychosocial hazard awareness and driver wellbeing in high-risk work environments

Participants deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment.

This course covers three Units of Competency:

TLIB0002 Carry out vehicle inspection

TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies

TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures

Assessments are conducted in the classroom and reviewed after the training. Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment. This certification is nationally recognised.

Language Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND)

If this is your first Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) course with WHS Foundation, you will be sent a short Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment to complete. This helps to ensure that you have the necessary skills to engage with your course content and assessments effectively. If any additional support is needed, we can provide guidance or resources to help you succeed.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)
