This Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) course is designed for individuals seeks to enter the heavy vehicle (HV) industry without holding a current HV driver’s license. It is ideal for those looking to understand the industry, gain practical exposure, and build foundational safety knowledge before progressing to formal licensing.

Delivered over two in-class days, the course provides an introductory overview of the road transport and heavy vehicle industry in Australia, with a particular focus on civil construction site operations and on-road heavy vehicle safety. Participants will learn about the HV industry, the hazards and risks associated with operating heavy vehicles, the hazards and risks of the road network, and the hazards and risks of other road users.

Students from all backgrounds are welcomed into WHS Foundation courses, where inclusivity, cultural safety and a sense of belonging are at the heart of our training.

Through reflective learning, peer support and practical application, participants will:

  • Explore the Australian heavy vehicle (HV) industry, its regulations, relevant authorities, and its role in transport and civil sectors
  • Identify and manage hazard and risks associated with HV driving, applying situational awareness and effective response techniques
  • Gain an understanding of Australia’s road network and regulations, including how to navigate key routes and locate further guidance and support
  • Assess the impact of varying weather conditions on HV operations and apply control measures to minimise risks as far as reasonably practicable
  • Recognise high-risk environments such as busy civil construction sites, applying hazard identification and risk control strategies
  • Apply inclsive communication and coordination techniques when working with culturtally and linguistically diverse (CALD) colleagues
  • Carry out pre-start checks, understanding their purpose, process, and contribution to overall workplace safety
  • Examine the effects of workplace fatigure on safety and apply techniques for managing and reducing fatigue-related risks
  • Implement movement breaks and physical activity strategies that support safe driving and driver wellbeing
  • Identify psychosocial hazards in isolated work environents and apply strategies to support mental health and reduce associated risks
  • Conduct a basic HV inspection safely and methodically
  • Gain an introduction to the heavy vehicle simulator, includings its basic operation and principles of use

Participants who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment.

This course covers three Units of Competency:

TLIB0002 Carry out vehicle inspection

TLIF2010 Apply fatigue management strategies

TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures

Assessments are conducted in the classroom and reviewed after the training. Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment. This certification is nationally recognised.

Language Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND)

If this is your first Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) course with WHS Foundation, you will be sent a short Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment to complete. This helps to ensure that you have the necessary skills to engage with your course content and assessments effectively. If any additional support is needed, we can provide guidance or resources to help you succeed.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required for enrolment in all nationally recognised training. If you do not already have a USI, you can create one quickly and easily at usi.gov.au.
