What is a Mining WHS Statutory Supervisor Course?

The Mining WHS Statutory Supervisor Course is designed to equip Statutory Supervisors in Western Australia with the knowledge and skills required to perform their roles competently and meet the requirements under Schedule 26 of the WHS (Mines) Regulations (WA) 2022.

WHS Foundation’s program is structured to ensure you gain both the theoretical understanding and the practical skills necessary to meet these legislative obligations. This includes a strong focus on Western Australia’s WHS legislation, which you will be required to reference throughout the course. For ease of learning and note-taking, participants are provided with copies of the WHS Act (2020) and the WHS (Mines) Regulations (2022) to use during training.

Training is delivered in a practical, classroom-based environment, with all assessments completed in-class under the guidance of experienced WHS trainers who bring extensive mining industry knowledge and real-world case studies. The course incorporates reflective learning, peer support, and practical application to ensure participants leave with the confidence and competence to apply WHS requirements in their supervisory roles.

Students from all backgrounds are welcomed into WHS Foundation courses, where inclusivity, cultural safety and a sense of belonging are at the heart of our training.

Through reflective learning, peer support and practical application, participants will:

  • Identify workplace hazards, conduct risk assessments and apply effective control measures
  • Engage in consultation processes as part of WHS risk management and decision-making
  • Strengthen WHS communication skills to support effective consultation, reporting and information sharing
  • Apply organisational WHS policies, procedures and programs to ensure safe and compliant practices
  • Facilitate WHS awareness and training activities within their teams to promote a strong safety culture
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to incident reporting to support compliance and continuous improvement
  • Understand responsibilities and duties under the Work Health and Safety Act (2020) and Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations (2022)

Participants who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment.

Please note: Statutory Supervisors are required to pass an examination managed by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS).

What units of competency does the Mining WHS Statutory Supervisor Course cover?

This course covers two Units of Competency:

BSBWHS411 Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs

BSBWHS414 Contribute to WHS risk management

Assessments are conducted in the classroom.

WHS Foundation’s Statutory Supervisor WHS course provides the required certification for Level 4 statutory supervisor roles but does not cover Level 5 certification. Please check the ‘Additional Info’ tab for more details.

How is this qualification delivered?

Each participant’s learning journey starts with successful enrolment in this course.

This qualification is delivered via face-to-face training and online. Participants are required to provide a laptop.

Language Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND)

If this is your first Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) course with WHS Foundation, you will be sent a short Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment to complete. This helps to ensure that you have the necessary skills to engage with your course content and assessments effectively. If any additional support is needed, we can provide guidance or resources to help you succeed.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required for enrolment in all nationally recognised training. If you do not already have a USI, you can create one quickly and easily at usi.gov.au.

Approved Statutory Supervisor Positions

WHS Foundation’s Statutory Supervisor WHS course includes units BSBWHS411 and BSBWHS414, which provide the required certification for Level 4 statutory supervisor roles outlined below.

  • Restricted quarry manager
  • Statutory supervisor
  • Mine air quality officer
  • Noise officer
  • Electrical supervisor

Level 5 statutory positions require the risk management core units, RIIRIS501E or BSBWHS513, which WHS Foundation does not deliver. As a result, certification for the Level 5 positions listed below is not provided.

Examination

Statutory Supervisors are required to pass an examination component, which is managed by the by the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety (LGIRS). For more details, please visit the LGIRS website here. One of the venues for the legal exam is the WHS Centre, providing a more convenient and seamless process.
