The Mine Air Quality Officer course is a two-day training program designed to develop the competencies required for the statutory appointment of Mine Air Quality Officer (MAQO) under the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022.

Under these regulations, a statutory-appointed Mine Air Quality Officer must demonstrate competence to ensure that workplaces are adequately ventilated and that risks arising from exposure to hazardous substances and airborne contaminants are effectively controlled. This course builds upon the technical and practical skills acquired in the three-day Mine Air Quality Technician course, advancing participants’ knowledge in ventilation management, contaminant control, and regulatory compliance in mining operations.

The program provides detailed instruction in mine air quality monitoring, exposure assessment, and the practical application of the hierarchy of control to minimise exposure risks. Participants will also examine the interrelationships between multiple atmospheric contaminants, the implicants of extended work shifts, and the use of systematic hazard management approaches across a variety of mining scenarios.

All assessments are completed in-course. On day two, participants sit a two-hour digital examination conducted through the aXcelerate Learner Portal, consisting of five assessments designed to evaluate proficiency in the essential skills required for the Mine Air Quality Officer role. All formal assessment requirements are finalised during the face-to-face training period.

Gradutes of this course qualify for Associate Membership of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygiene (AIOH), demonstrating industry-recognised competence and technical proficiency in mine air quality management.

Through reflective learning, peer support & practical application, participants will:

  • Discuss the application of the hierarchy of control in order to minimise risks from exposure to atmospheric contaminants
  • Assess the need for adjustments to exposure standards where shifts exceed eight hours and apply the appropriate formula to determine exposure levels
  • Explain the interrelationships between multiple atmospheric contaminants, their combined effects on workers, and the challenges associated with measurement and monitoring
  • Discuss hazard and risk management in the context of the hierarchy of controls
  • Apply a systematic approach to managing hazards across various exposure scenarios in mining operations, including confined spaces and welding and allied processes

Participants who successfully complete this course will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance.

Participants must have completed the Mine Air Quality Technician course. Failure to complete this requirement may affect your eligibility to participate in the course.

Are there any special requirements for the Mine Air Quality Officer course?
