The Volunteering WHS Award recognises and celebrates a positive initiative, contribution or commitment to improving work health and safety for volunteers in a volunteer involving organisation.
Volunteering is vitally important to the community delivering needed and valuable social services at the same time providing engagement and fulfilment opportunities and experiences for individual volunteers.
With a few exceptions, volunteer involving organisations and their volunteer workers are covered by the WHS laws and have respective duties relating to work health and safety of volunteer work.
However, there may be challenges in ensuring WHS for volunteer workers including determining that WHS laws apply to the volunteering relationship and the work, WHS management capability and resources, the diversity and nature of the volunteer work, inexperienced and ageing workers in some cases, and the absence of usual employment worker control to volunteer workers.
The selection criteria for this award include the following:
Entry to this award is open to all individuals or volunteer involving organisations that operate in Western Australia, including the corporate, government, not-for-profit and community sectors involved in volunteering.
